Buying a Previously Owned Car, Truck or SUV
Here are some simple tips to follow when buying a used car from a car dealer or a private party;
- Have a particular model vehicle in mind so that you can research what the vehicle is worth prior to entering negotiations on price.
- Always insist on having your mechanic take a look at the vehicle prior to completing your transaction. You can either leave a deposit or have the seller go with you to the mechanic.
- Check with a service such as Car Facts to find out important service history, accident history, etc on the vehicle.
- Test drive for a minimum of 20 minutes on both highway and city streets. If there is a major problem with the vehicle, it should shows itself during that time period. Do not test drive with the stereo/radio on. Turn on briefly to make sure they work and then turn them off. Drive with the windows down (weather permitting) so you can hear the engine and moving parts.
- Check out the body for signs of whether the vehicle has been in a major accident.
If you purchase a vehicle that has been freshly painted or is in good shape, we would recommend purchasing a car cover to protect it.
