Driving Your Car in Winter Weather

October 27, 2009

Driving your car or truck in rain, snow or under icy conditions can be stressful as well as perilous. There are a few things that you can do to increase your chances of a safe outing.

· Make sure your windshield wiper blades are working properly

· If you live in an area where you get a lot of snow, change to snow tires in the winter season or carry tire chains at all times.

· Leave extra room between you and the car in front of you.

· When there is more than one lane in your direction of travel, leave yourself an out (make sure there is no vehicle beside you in the next lane).

· Keep a windshield ice scraper in your trunk. Sometimes when you park your car for a while you will get ice build up on your windshield that you will want to remove before driving again.

· If you brake and start to fish tail, do not brake harder or panic. Instead if there are no vehicles in front of you let up on the brake and turn your wheel into the direction of the slide.

· Drive slower than usual.

You should always drive defensively, but it is more important as the driving conditions get worse.

Tips for Saving Money on New Rims for Your Ride

October 21, 2009

With the economy being in the dumps, just about everyone is looking to save money where they can. If you are in the market for some rims for your car or truck we have four tips on where or how you might be able to save money on your purchase.

The first place to look is your local auto salvage yard or junk yards. There are plenty of cars that were in accidents that have been deemed not worth fixing that have had no damage to their rims. The salvage yards piece meal off the parts from these cars making for a great opportunity for you to get a great deal on some new wheels.

The internet is another source for cheap rims. While a lot of these companies that sell on the internet have a brick and mortar location as well, there are equally a number that only sell on the internet without the overhead of the brick and mortar business. This translates into savings for you. Don’t forget to figure in the cost of installation.

There are also companies that will take your existing rims and have them chromed. A lot of the rim designs are nothing more than factory non chromed rims which have been chromed. Some of the companies have those chromed rims in stock and will change your rims for theirs when you come in so that you do not have to wait long.

The last suggestion is to shop for your rims on EBay or Craigs list. Most of the time the rims that you find here will be used, however more and more businesses are selling new rims on EBay at reduced prices.

Like anything else, do your homework before purchasing so that you know exactly what you will be getting as far as quality, size you need, etc..

If you search the internet for fuel saving tips, you find some legitimate tips and some tips that are bogus. You say you do not have the time or the inclination to do the research, not to worry I have done it for you!

The list below represents the best tips for saving fuel, in turn saving you money, in no particular order;

  1. Eliminate the use ethanol blended fuels
  2. Don’t Accelerate quickly and decelerate slowly (anticipate traffic signal light changes)
  3. If you are stopped for longer than a traffic signal, turn your engine off.
  4. Maintaining Proper tire pressure is essential.
  5. Turn of your air conditioning unless you absolutely need it.
  6. Drive with your windows up whenever cool enough outside.
  7. If you have a truck, install a cab high camper shell, a bed cover or remove your tailgate and install a cargo net or frame.

There are Benefits to Window Tinting Your Vehicle’s Windows

October 15, 2009

Most people do not realize that there are more benefits to tinting your car, truck or SUV’s windows than keeping the inside of your vehicle cooler. Here is a short list of the other benefits of tinting your windows;

· UV Protection – The sun will dry out your interior and cause it to crack over time. Professional grade window films can block up to 99% of these harmful rays. It also can help protect your skin as everyone knows that the suns UV rays can lead to skin cancer.

· Privacy and Security – Tinted glass can add a little privacy and added security to your vehicle. It makes it harder for would be thieves to see what valuable equipment you may have installed or valuable personal belongings are in your car. The tinting film also provides some added strength to the glass of your car or truck in the event of a break in. This may slow the thief just enough for someone to catch him/her in the act and call the police.

· Protection from Broken Glass – If you are in an auto accident your window film can help keep the glass breakage from flying throughout your car, truck or SUV. The combination of the film’s adhesive and the tensile strength of the film itself can keep the glass intact to a certain degree, thereby reducing the chance of serious injury from broken glass.

· Reduces Glare – The Sun’s glare reflecting off another vehicle can reduce the visibility of your peripheral vision. Having your side windows tinted (it is illegal to tint your entire windshield) can help reduce or eliminate that glare that can obscure your vision of oncoming traffic.

· Makes Your Vehicle Look Better – Tinted windows on any vehicle makes it look better as long as you do not go too dark.

The Different Types of Car Covers

October 12, 2009

Car covers have come a long way since they were invented approximately 50 years ago. Back then they came in one color and one style. Today covers come in all shapes, colors and sizes to help you protect your vehicle from natural elements and minor dents and dings. If you leave your car uncovered it is susceptible to oxidation of your cars paint, bird droppings which can eat through the finish of your car and dirt/dust which can act as an abrasive and scratch your paint. A covered car will keep your auto from being scratched by the claws of animals that walk on your vehicle.

A car cover that doesn’t fit properly can damage your vehicle. A cover that does not fit correctly will flap in the wind which can lead to a scratched car surface that is why it is important to make sure to invest in a cover that is the correct size for your year and make of car.

The one size fits all are cheaper but will not protect your car like a custom or semi custom fitted cover will. Another thing to be sure not to do is to put a cover on a dirty vehicle. Not only can this defeat the purpose of putting a cover on in the first place, having dirt between your cover and the paint of your car can act like sandpaper when removing the cover from your car.

In order to make sure you are getting the best type of car cover for your vehicle you should familiarize yourself with the types of covers that are available. The things that you need to consider before choosing your cover are;

1. Are you covering your car for storage?
2. Will the car cover be used on a daily basis?
3. What type of climate do you live in? Is it rainy, mostly sunny, snow?

There are different types of covers for each of the three questions above. There are waterproof covers, covers with high UV protection and water resistant covers that are breathable.

5 Things to Remember When Shopping for Car Insurance

October 9, 2009

You can save money on your car insurance if you are willing to invest a little bit of your time searching and comparison shopping.

The first thing you need to do is get at least six quotes for the sake of apples to apples comparison. When comparing your quotes, make sure that the coverage amounts being quoted are the same from company to company. One way an insurance company can make their quote less is by offering less personal liability coverage or higher deductibles.

Make sure to buy the coverage level suitable to protect your assets. The minimum coverage is not typically enough if say for example you own your home. You may find that there is not a big difference in price for $500,000 in coverage versus $300,000.

The following are a few reminders when shopping for car insurance;

1. Compare the insurance coverage that are being quoted to ensure you are comparing apples to apples.

2. Make sure that you give the same information regarding your driving history to each company that you seek a quote for. They will want to know if you have had any traffic accidents in the last 5 years or any traffic violations in the last 3 years.

3. Make sure that the insurance company is trustworthy. They should have an A or A+ rating. The payment of any liability claims against you may depend on this rating.

4. It doesn’t hurt to let the Agent know that you are shopping other companies as well.

5. You can shortcut the time it takes to get quotes but going to one of the websites that will do the comparison shopping for you. Just make sure that it is an independent broker, not someone whom works for one particular insurance company.

One last thing to keep in mind is that you should shop for new insurance every year at least 30 days prior to your renewal date to ensure that you have the best coverage at the lowest price.

Information You Should Know Before Purchasing New Tires

October 7, 2009

Most people do not realize the importance of purchasing the correct tires for you car or truck. There is a right and wrong size and type of tire for your vehicle.

Some people think that just because they are paying more for a set of tires they are getting better tires. There are others that think that brand name tires are the best tires that they can buy for their van or SUV. Others just take the word of the person whom they are buying the tires from forgetting that he is a salesman that may or may not have your best interest in mind. While any of these buying techniques may help in your purchase, the best way to get the best tires for your automobile is to be informed. The following are the things that you need to consider when choosing a tire;

1. How long do you need your tires to last? You can check the Uniform Tire Quality Grading rating for the tires being considered to find out how long they should last.

2. Do you live in a wet weather state? You want to make sure to buy the appropriate tires that can handle the usual weather in your area.

3. Evaluate the speed rating. If the freeway or interstate where you most frequently drive has a speed limit of 75 mph, do you really need a tire that is speed rated for beyond 150 mph?

4. Assess the quality of ride provided by the tire. Some tires provide a smoother and quieter ride than others.

Once you have purchased your tires, make sure to purchase the hazard warranty protection if available, new valve stems and lifetime balancing if available. Always keep your tires properly inflated and rotate as recommended by the manufacturer to insure that you receive the most from your tires.

Maintaining Your Auto’s Filters is Important

October 6, 2009

One of the most overlooked areas of maintenance for your vehicle are the fuel and air filters. Fuel & air filters are essential to maintain peak engine performance in your auto. Vehicle owners to not realize that any part of the automobile that intakes air or fluid almost certainly will need to filter out foreign particles. After prolonged use, the filters become overloaded with impurities and particles to the point where they are restricting fuel and air flow. This reduces the efficiency of your vehicle’s engine which in turn will cause you to get worse gas mileage.

This is one of the least expensive and most beneficial maintenance procedures you can do for your auto. In addition to increased fuel efficiency, fuel filters will prevent clogs, prevent wearing and damaging of injectors and help to avoid breakdowns and the costs of same

Fuel and air Filters are easy to change. If you get your hands on a repair manual for your vehicle, it will have step by step instructions on how to replace these filters. If your are able to change your own filters, you will not only save money but it will also save you time as well. I would recommend any brand name filter from your local auto parts store as a replacement for your factory installed filters.

Wheel Balancing; Why is it Important?

October 3, 2009

Almost everyone knows the importance of rotating your car’s tires every 3,000 – 5,000 miles. But one of the most overlooked maintenance procedures for your car or truck is wheel balancing. Most tire companies sell lifetime road hazard coverage, tire rotation and wheel balancing at the time you purchase your tires. It is highly recommended that you take advantage of this service. It usually will cost less than $25 to cover all four tires and wheels.

Every time you have your tires rotated you should have the wheels balanced and the air pressure checked. As your tires start to wear the wheels become out of balance. If your wheels are not balanced properly you can wear out your tires faster and can experience vibration in your steering wheel at higher speeds.

Also, sometimes a wheel balancing weight can come loose and move or even come off of the wheel causing your wheel to be out of balance. As you can see it is a good idea to have your wheels rebalanced every time you have your tires rotated.
