Tips on Repairing Paint Scratches
Ever wonder how to determine what it will take to repair that scratch on your car? The following are three tests for determining just how much needs to be done to repair that scratch;.
1. Run your fingernail over the scratch. If the area fells like it is raised, you probably have a paint transfer (paint from another vehicle on top of your paint). Most paint transfers can be removed by using paint thinner or gasoline on a soft cloth. If that doesn’t remove it, try some rubbing compound. Gently rub the paint transfer until removed. Rubbing too hard will remove your car’s paint as well.
2. If you can see the scratch but do not feel anything while running your fingernail over the scratch, you probably have a light clear coat scratch. Try car wax first to see if this removes the scratch. If wax doesn’t work, try gently scrubbing some rubbing compound over the scratch. Once the scratch is removed apply some wax to the affected area.
3. If you can feel the indentation of a scratch and there is paint left, you can add clear coat and then sand and buff once it dries. If there isn’t any paint remaining you should take your car in to your auto body painter!
You can potentially save hundreds of dollars by following these tips for removing minor scratches. When ever using any kind of thinner or abrasive on your paint it is a good idea to test it first on an area that will not be seen
