Should I Run My Car’s Air Conditioning in the Winter?

December 16, 2009

Now that the fall and winter seasons are upon us, most of us will be using our car’s heater on a semi regular basis. It would not be unusual to go four months or more without using the air conditioner in our Car, Truck or SUV and not give it a second thought.

There are a couple of reasons why you should run your air conditioner at least once every two weeks for 10 minutes or more. The first reason is that it will keep the seals of your AC unit lubricated. The majority of the AC systems in vehicles today have self lubricating features. They only work while the system is running.

The second reason is that it is less likely that your system will not work when you go to use it in the spring and summer months. Older AC systems will lose their Freon if you do not use them on a regular basis.

Why Do People Think That Driving in the Rain is Hard?

December 8, 2009

The Rainy season is in full effect across the country. I thought that it would be a good time to put to rest the fallacy that it is difficult to drive in the rain. I am here to tell you that if you are willing to prepare your car for the rainy weather and follow a couple of simple tips, there is no reason that you should have a problem driving in the rain.

The first thing you should do is make sure your car is ready to be driven in the rain. Go and invest in new windshield wipers which are less than $15 for a pair that are top of the line. This will insure maximum visibility. Have your tires checked for remaining tread life. If there is 20% or less tread remaining, replace your tires. Lastly, check the tire pressure. It is better to under inflate your tires during the rainy season than over inflating. Over inflating can increase the chance of your car hydro planning. Once completing the above your car is ready.

The next thing you should do is slow down and leave more distance between you and the car in front of you. It takes more time for your car to stop on wet asphalt or pavement. I know this seems really basic, but I continually see people speeding in the rain.

If you slow down and drive safely you will lower your stress level and lower your chances of having an accident.
